KCBD-TV has been the top-rated news station in the Lubbock market for over 20 years, according to Nielsen ratings. The station's news operation has also won numerous awards, including several from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.In addition to its main studios on Avenue Q, KCBD operates a weather department and news bureau in the nearby town of Levelland. The station also maintains a news bureau and a weather department in the Permian Basin area in Midland. KCBD was the first station in the market to operate a news helicopter, which it debuted in 1979. In 2007, the station unveiled a new high-definition news set and began broadcasting its newscasts in high definition. In 2010, KCBD became the first station in the market to upgrade to full 1080i high definition newscasts.
In 2011, KCBD launched "KCBD First Alert Weather 24/7," a 24-hour weather channel featuring local weather information. The channel is carried on Suddenlink Communications channel 13 and is also available on KCBD's website.
