About WNEP 16At one time, there were two ABC network affiliates serving northeastern Pennsylvania. WILK-TV, operating on channel 34 and owned by WILK radio, signed on the air from Wilkes-Barre on September 16, 1953. It was followed by WARM-TV, which began broadcasting on channel 16 from Scranton in February 1954. WARM-TV was owned by William Scranton, who would later become Governor of Pennsylvania, along with WARM radio.
During the late 1950s, WILK-TV was briefly affiliated with the NTA Film Network. Both stations were important sources of news and entertainment for their respective communities and played a significant role in the development of television in northeastern Pennsylvania.
