It began operations in 1932 as W3XE, an experimental station owned by Philco Corporation, a major manufacturer of radio and television sets at the time. The station was based in Philco's production plant in North Philadelphia and was equipped with cameras and other equipment designed and built by Philco engineers. In 1941, W3XE started sharing programs with W2XBS (later WNBT and now WNBC) in New York City, becoming NBC's second television affiliate and establishing a connection between the two stations that would last for 54 years. Throughout its history, the channel 3 facility in Philadelphia has played a significant role in the development of television technology and programming, and has remained an important source of news and entertainment for the region.
